The air around us now is different to a hundred years or perhaps even just a decade ago. With the factories of death (feeling a bit exaggerated) emitting harmful residue every single day, our air is now more polluted than ever.
As such, the necessity for an air purifier is higher than you can imagine. Air pollution isn’t the only reason for purchasing an air purifier though. There are allergens, dust, mold, and whatnot, which are quite unhealthy to breathe in, and specifically deadly to folks with respiratory issues.
Though, we guess you are already aware of it since you are reading our review on the top 10 best air purifier of 2021.

General Benefits of an Air Purifier
Almost everyone knows the obvious benefit of an air purifier is, well, it cleans the air. However, to fully comprehend what air purifier is best for what, it is necessary to understand how they purify the air and more details on the benefits.
Generally, the air surrounding us is filled with trillions of everything. Oxygen, CO2, nitrogen, and so on, but things that cause breathing issues aren’t those on the molecular level. Instead, it is the dust, mold, hair, and fur from our furry little buddies and things which are more visible. They are still small, as small as 5 microns (which is the lowest a human’s eyes can see), but not on a molecular level.
Here is the part that not everybody knows, with particles larger than 2.5 microns, the body has its biological mechanism to filter them out. Anything smaller than that is very deadly to folks with respiratory conditions, especially asthma. These airborne particles can easily travel straight to your lungs when you breathe. Just in case you are wondering, the common particles that cause irritation are of the following sizes:
- Spores: 3 to 40 microns
- Mold: 3 to 12 microns
- Bacteria: 0.3 – 60 microns
- Smoke: 1 to 150 microns (ranging from cigarette smoke to different type of exhaust fumes from cars and something else)
- Dander and fur particles: 5 to 10 microns
To sum it up, an air purifier can offer two most important benefits:
- Cleaner air without the annoying particles that irritate your eyes and nose.
- Safer air to breathe for those with a respiratory condition (but first, you must purchase the right air purifier).
Five Most Common Types of Air Purifiers
There are quite a lot of different kinds of air purifier out there, especially as technology evolves, people rapidly discover more ways to build one. Though the following are the most common ones, you will see on the market.
HEPA – High-Efficiency Particulate Air
To be classified as an authentic HEPA, a filter needs to be able to filter at least 99.97% of particles above the size of 0.3 microns. However, the actual percentage is very dependent on what the related local authority dictates.
For instance, the European Standard EN1822 dictates that a HEPA filter is one that achieves the efficiency from 85% to 99.995% against particles of 0.3 microns.
Hence, if you want to be extra sure of the efficiency of a particular HEPA filter, check out the place it was made or the authority that issues the HEPA approval. We don’t see the reason for doing so unless you need to be precise for a medical condition.
Most UV Lights air purifiers do come with a filtration system to trap particulates in the air just like any other standard filter. However, it is not what they are primarily used for. It is used to disinfect the air by altering the DNA of the viruses and pathogens and destroy them using UV lights.
Similar to other purifiers, Ionic purifiers are there to clean the air and reduce irritants in the air. However, silence is the most notable thing about them. They work without a motor inside. That’s why you do not have to hear the engine running sound.
However, the way they clean the air is a bit different. They shoot negative ions which will bond with whatever it is in the air that has positively charged ion (dander, mold, dust, etc.). As a result, those particles become heavier than the air and fall out of it.
Of course, they do have some shortfalls such as needing regular maintenance, and only suitable for a small area, but the pros are perfect for those with particular conditions. More details will be shown below in the products review section, so read on
Similar to the Ionic purifiers (these things emit positively charged ions though), but with the help of the HEPA technology, the electronic purifiers clean your air like no others.
The HEPA filter inside an electronic purifier will trap common air pollutants above the size of 0.3 microns. Then shoot positively charged ions into the air to zap whatever left that isn’t picked up by the HEPA filter.
Alright, we sort of feel like you might be getting a bit bored or wasn’t even interested in the science stuff in the first place. Hence, we will say what they are good and bad at.
An activated carbon air purifier is very efficient at removing gas-like irritants in the air. So, the stench in the air, smoke from a cigarette, and so on will be quickly eliminated at the cost of inferior efficiency of trapping other types of particles.
Tips for Choosing an Air Purifier That Suits Your
It is imperative to identify your greatest air quality issue. Next, prioritise the type of purifier you should get to target those issues specifically.
We have tapped on the different type of purifier for various purposes, but let us further elaborate it down here with other must-know terminologies and knowledge necessary for your decision making a phrase.
1. HEPA Type
The term HEPA is quite loosely used these days in advertisement leading to a huge amount of misunderstanding.
You must know that true HEPA and HEPA type (HEPA like or whatever else that does not specifically state true HEPA) are different. True HEPA filters are those which have been verified to meet the standardized requirements as mentioned at the beginning of the article.
Purifiers advertised as HEPA type or HEPA like are not guaranteed to meet those standards. They can have any range of efficiency and without the legal obligation to prove it to consumers. We are not saying they are definitely inferior, it’s just that you do not have the assurance of verification from a reliable third party.
Essentially, you can only know if the HEPA type purifier you are purchasing is better, equal to or worse than the true HEPA products only after the purchase.
2. Hyper HEPA Filters
Is Hyper HEPA true HEPA then? No, they are not, but they are even better than true HEPA. Any filter that has been proven to achieve a 99.97% efficiency of trapping particles down to 0.3 microns is true HEPA. Hyper HEPA? Those beasts could trap things as small as 0.003 microns, meaning not even viruses can escape them.
Therefore, if you manage to find a hyper HEPA purifier that suits your budget, you can basically skip the part where you worry about if it would trap this or that, and consider other things.
3. Filtration Efficiency
Throughout our review up there, you probably have noticed terms like CADR or ACH when we refer to the efficiency of the air purifier. These are the measurement method widely used to compare how effective or efficient an air purifier is in air cleaning.
The abbreviation stands for Clean Air Delivery Rate. When a manufacturer would like to tell the consumer how fast their purifiers can finish cleaning the air of a room, they use CADR. However, CADR itself is just a concept, the actual measurement unit used for this concept is CFM (short for Cubic Feet per Minute)
Please note that most air purifiers would usually have a different CADR rating for various irritants. For instance, 300 cfm dust, 320 smoke and 300 pollen (or other similar figures) are what you would see in a standard air purifier for a medium-sized bedroom.
However, those figures wouldn’t mean much if we do not know how a particular set of CADR rating stack up against most other purifiers on the market. In other words, what do other products offer?
For comparison sake, let’s use our best overall product, the Germ Guardian AC4825 which is under $100, to see what sort of CADR we can get. The AC4825 has CADR ratings of 131 for dust, 112 for smoke and 123 for pollen. Now let’s stack those figures up with our best purifier for Smoke, the Coway AP 1512 which is in the range of $200 ~ $270 (price depends on multiple factors), that has an average of 220 CADR across three aspects.
Hence, we can roughly internalize that for every additional $100 you pay, you should get an incremental CADR rating of 100. Unfortunately, we cannot give you a definitive answer on what sort CADR rating you need for your room condition. The reason is that it is entirely dependent on how picky you are with your indoor air quality and the susceptibility of your room (or house) toward pollutants.
What we can tell you is that A. higher CADR rating does not always mean it is better, you need an air purifier with CADR rating that suit the pollution level of your room; and B. determine what sort of pollutants are the main issue of your breathing problem and choose an air purifier with the CADR rating higher in those categories (i.e. pollen, dust and smoke)
5. Filter Replacement
There are a good and a bad thing about considering whether to purchase an air purifier based on filter replacement.
The good thing is, it is simple. It is especially so when you are tight on a budget, you might want to refrain from purchasing an air purifier with frequent and expensive filter replacement necessity.
The bad thing is that you might end up buying an undesirable purifier. If you make your decision solely based on it, you might end up looking at a sub-par purifier that does a really banged up job in air cleaning. Therefore it will be stated as “replace your filter only once per year!”.
6. Room Coverage
Another loosely used concept for marketing purposes. You might have been told that a particular room can clean up the air up to certain square feet. Thought what people are not telling you is how efficient it is in doing so? That’s where ACH comes in handy.
ACH is abbreviated for Air Changes per Hour. The rating will tell you often the purifier is completely swapping out old air with new air. Most purifiers will let you adjust the ACH of your purifier, so if you want to breathe fresh air every hour, we would say at least 3X ACH is desirable.
However, that is beside our point: that is related to your room coverage. The thing is the room coverage quickly dwindle as you crank up the ACH setting. If you demand your purifier to swap out new air 5 times every hour, then an effective range of the purifier is different to when you only ask it to do so 3 times only.
In short, when the sales consultant gives you an impressive figure on coverage, inquire him what the ACH rating for that coverage.
The very last aspect to be considered. We personally think this is not as important as the others. We mean, of course, it is preferable that your air purifier does not roar louder than a mountain lion, but isn’t cleaning air the main purpose here?
Though, we do agree that there is a specific circumstance where noise needs to be considered first. For example, when you are planning to place the purifier in the bedroom, noise is indeed the more prevalent factor.
How noisy your purifier should be is, once again, dependent on your personal attributes. A heavy sleeper would not give much attention to a slightly noisy purifier, but a light sleeper on the hand might be pickier than that.
Regardless, for reference purposes, noises up 30 decibels are scientifically believed to cause no observable adverse impacts on sleep quality. Whereas noises up to 40 decibels are said to cause some tossing around and minor disturbances. Anything higher than that is definitely approaching the jet engine domain.

Now that’s done, without further ado, let’s begin our review for the top 10 best air purifiers.
1. Best Overall – Blue Pure 211
$299.99 Buy On Amazon
As mentioned above, different types of air purifiers excel in a particular area in terms of improving air quality. Despite not being a true HEPA filter, It was quite impressive that the Blue Pure 211 was able to achieve 99.95% efficiency during our own testing.
What’s more, purchasing one would not compel you to file for bankruptcy. While being in that competitive price range, the Blue Pure 211 still offers a set of CADR rating of 590 which is incredibly impressive. By the way, if you are not familiar with the CADR concept, keep reading till the end of the article where we explain more about it.
Alright, enough with the specs and statistic figures. How did it feel like after we test the product? We tried to be critical about its performance we failed miserably. The pre-filter worked like a charm in reducing the first layer of irritants to improve the filtering of the remaining filtration layers.
After couple of hours running the purifier, the air felt like it was pure premium Oxygen from an Oxygen breathing tank. After leaving it running for a night, we noticed the dust, pet dander and fur reduced significantly even with the presence of our two golden retrievers.
Too good to be true? Not really, it does have its shortfalls. The Blue Pure 211 has not additional features whatsoever. It is a one-button air purifier. You push the button and it cleans the air.
Now, that might not be much of an issue since it will improve the air quality around you. However, we always feel that not having at least several smart functions such as scheduled timer, remote Wi-Fi control and so on, is a bit of a let down.
If you have multiple issues at home, from sneezing, itchy eyes and nose, to potentially virus-infected air, then this bad boy is for you to bring home. It works with wonder and does not cost a lot.
No additional and smart features is a bummer, but we would say it is a fair trade for great air quality improvement at a price like that.

2. Best HEPA Air Purifier – Pure Enrichment PureZone 3-in-1
$99.99 Buy On Amazon
The PureZone air purifier was reluctantly put in the second place, to be honest. It has performance quality on par with the Germ Guardian, but without any issue with burning circuits. So why was it put in the second place?
First off, we have to double emphasize that the products have received many praises, so despite the upcoming cons, it does its jobs well. As far as we are concerned, there hasn’t been a single complain about it not trapping dander, not getting rid of dust and so on.
The Purezone 3-in-1 is a true HEPA filter. Thus, as per the explanation above, you wouldn’t have to worry about its efficiency in catching irritants of smaller micron sizes.
Additionally, with the carbon activated filter and the UV light filtration systems, this air purifier is designed to also get rid of smoke, odors and sterile air.
However, the cons combo of small room coverage and odors pushes it down to the second spot. With a rating of 80 cubic feet per minute, Purezone is best suited for a small room. Ironically, the common complaint of random noises and strange odor further worsens the issue (small space, noisy and smell? ugh).
Once again, it is imperative to mention one thing, the majority of customers do not have the said issue. Those who experienced the issues indicated that the issue could be solved by simply washing, or replacing the filters (semiannually).
Are you living in a small room, or working in a small office? The Purezone will make sure whatever air quality issue you might have will be solved with an affordable price. As for the odors, there are ways to get rid of the odor. So don’t let it be the reason to deny you of the quality air you can have.

3. Best Air Purifier for Allergies – Alen BreathSmart
$548.64 (9% off) Buy On Amazon
Before we start reviewing the Alen BreathSmart purifier, please note that there are so many things about this product which can’t all be put here. So if you would like a full review on it, please click on the link here. In this review section, we will only mention the most outstanding and prime issues with this purifier.
The reward of irritants trap of the year has to go to Alen BreathSmart. Seriously, for people with allergies to dander, pet fur, dust and the like, would probably be willing to divorce their partners if it means getting this babe home.
We used one of our coworkers’ cousin, who is allergic to dust and has a pet allergy for the experiment for the sake of this review. (btw hi Bruce, if you are reading this article, thanks buddy!). As a person who was always deadly allergic to dogs, the cousin was able to breathe while petting several puppers for the first time.
When we checked the pre-filter after two weeks of dealing with pollutants in the house, the poor thing trapped so many fur and dander. It was probably enough to make a coat out of it.
However, the biggest minus for the Alen Breathsmart is also its HEPA filter. It’s not true HEPA even though it is priced significant over most other purifiers on the market. As explained above, True HEPA is a term indicating the efficiency in trapping 99.97% particles in the air which are above the size of 0.3 microns.
On the other hand, HEPA-like filter (and another similar terminology which is not true HEPA), will be attempting the same thing, but not as efficient. The Alen Breathsmart is still fantastic in trapping mold and dust though (which are at least 3 microns in size).
Sadly, if your air problems are with things smaller than that, it might not be as efficient as a true HEPA purifier.
Another thing that put people off (which did not happen to us though) was the dead-on-arrival issue. It seems like a small number of customers received a faulty product on delivery.
Are your air problems mainly with dust, mold, or things about that size, and cash is not an issue? The Alen Breathsmart is yours for the taking. Do not worry about the dead on arrival issue, after all, what the hell is a lifetime warranty for, right?
4. Best Air Purifier for Smoke – Coway AP-1512HH
$190 (16% off) Buy On Amazon
Coway AP-1512HH would have been the best overall purifier if not for several issues. To start the review, please note that it has no performance issue at all. Irritants trapping, getting rid of odor, working hard in silence without asking you praise it, you name it, whatever it is that a purifier is supposed to do, it does it well, especially in the smoke riddance department.
Many verified buyers (with breathing problems concerning smoke) have vowed that their air quality issue decreased drastically after using Coway AP-1512HH. Not bad for a price like that.
Regardless, it has some major issues with durability. Don’t get us wrong. If you handle it properly, it would probably last for years before you have to replace it with a new one. The durability issue we are referring to is the susceptibility to damage.
Although uncommon, a small number of customers have reported major issues with its performance and safety right after the purchase. Upon closer examination, most customers revealed that the issues were related to damage during shipping.
Another notable con with most Ionizer purifier is the ozone emission, and Coway AP-1512HH is one of them, unfortunately.
If you are living with a smoker and also have other air quality issue, Coway AP-1512HH could the excellent choice for your home. However, be sure to examine the product carefully for any damage during shipping and get a new one to avoid the issues mentioned above.

5. Best Air Purifier for Pets – Levoit LV-H132
$88.80 Buy On Amazon
Right off the bat, you can see from the pro section that the biggest advantage of the Levoit LV-H132 is its extreme affordability. Other than that, there are several reasons why it is labeled as best for pets.
It has a rather sturdy built for its price, and it is also portable. For most pet owners out there, what are some of the common characteristics that most pets share with each other? They knock things off and are always the run!
That’s the reason why the sturdy built, and portability come hand handy here. You can relocate it anytime with ease to be closer to the source of pollutants (sorry, puppers and catties, but it is the truth), and not worry about them knocking the purifier off and accidentally break it. Then the purifier will do its job well and trap all the fur and dander in the air for you.
The very last advantage why it is pet-friendly is the combination between the 2-year warranty and the very decent customer service. The support team seems to be very responsive to any complaints and questions. Several customers whine about not being helped.
However, closer examination in the comment section revealed that the customers are non-responsive ones. There are tons of messages left in the comment section by the support team asking for more info and details, but the complaining customers have not replied.
Ironically though, the carbon activated filter is quite susceptible to issue caused by gas and smoke. Even though it is supposed to deal with them, you would expect them to bit resistant to, but turns out they are not. Many people have complained that after a couple of uses in areas with smoke and gas, the purifier will give off the same smell in subsequent uses.
Cleaning or replacing the filter will solve the problem, but then come to the second inconvenience, it does not automatically tell you the filter needs to be replaced. That is quite a bummer as you have to check and see if it needs replacement periodically.
Owning a pet or two would incur additional expenses and tighten your budget. The Levoit LV-H132 makes sure that you won’t be excluded the privilege for quality air due to that reason. Just make sure you check the filter regularly, and the cons of the product might as well be non-existent.

6. Best Air Purifier for Mold – AeraMax 300
$229.07 (22% off) Buy On Amazon
To explain our rationale for why the AeraMax 300 is labeled as the best purifier for mold, we must examine the type of customer that usually have issues with mold, hay fever, and asthma folks.
Other contaminants such as dander and dust are an issue for them too, but not owning a pet and regular cleaning usually solve the issue. Mold, though, is an entirely different set of problems. They spore in a warm and humid environment, which is something out of your control.
As the invoker of hayfever and potentially asthma symptoms too, they will haunt you every corner of your house. So you need a purifier that can deal with them effectively even in a large room. AeraMax 300 does just that and some more. The four-stage purification sucks in contaminants (especially molds) like a black hole from every nook and cranny.
By the way, it will also let you know if there are pollutants in the air (a significant amount) so you know if it should be turned to deal with them. Neat, isn’t it?
What’s the cost for this babe? It craves recognition! It will make sure that you are aware of its hard working. The moment you turn the airflow to maximum, the engine will emit noise to make sure you stay awake and acknowledge its efforts.
Jokes and metaphors aside, we found the most concerning con about AeraMax 300 to be the lacking instruction for asthma customers. The product itself is certified to be helpful for asthma users. However, the fact that the negative ions emitted is potentially harmful to asthma patients is nowhere to be found in the manual.
The four-stage purification design is good and all, but you need to turn off the ionizer if you have asthma. This should be displayed clearly both on the package and in the manual, in our personal opinion.
Excellent for people with breathing problem concerning mold specifically and asthma. However, to rectify the cons mentioned, you need earplugs (unless you are a heavy sleeper), and do a bit of research into things that trigger asthma and adjust the setting of the AeraMax 300 accordingly.
7. Best Air Purifier for Dust – IQAir HealthPro Plus Air
$899 Buy On Amazon
For the review of this specific product, we will reverse the format a bit. Let’s start off with the cons section, it is expensive. We actually had to spend the effort to look for some shortfalls. Everything we found was being pricey related. Even the unusual chemical odor can be rectified if you change the filter (which is also expensive).
What the pros for a product costing nearly $1000? Please come up with a list of things you would expect an air purifier to do, and we bet that IQAir HealthPro being able to carry them out beyond your expectation. If you are interested in knowing more about its specs and full features, check out our detailed review here.
For this review, we are going to mention the most notable features only, the Smart Sensor function. The sensor can detect the actual quality of air and automatically adjust the settings accordingly to purify the air. That is some iron-man technology stuff right there. To top off the pros list, the purifier produces zero noise disturbances.
You value air quality and have not got single care for expenses? IQAir is ready for adoption.

8. Best Air Purifier for Bedroom – Rabbit Air MinusA2
Buy On Amazon
Once again, refer back to the part where we explain about a different type of purifier, now imagine an air purifier being a hybrid of all those types plus a pre-filter, and that would be the MinusA2.
With the ambition of being the leading brand in the air purification industry, RabbitAir probably designs MinusA2 to deal with any air quality issues. To check out the full details for the MinusA2, please click here. However, the reasons why we label it as best for bedroom uses are due two the following pro and con.
Usually how productive are you when you are the bedroom? Probably zero, you are there to chill, relax, and eventually drift into your cotton dreamland. That’s why having to stand up and adjust whatever it is with your air purifier is the last thing in the universe you want to do.
RabbitAir is fully aware of that and has integrated the wifi control function in MinusA2. So, excellent performance, thin design, minimalist looking, quiet and it allows you to remote control it? If this is not meant to be in the bedroom, we are not sure what is.
However, it has two major cons that, A. prevent it to be used elsewhere, and B. it excludes a group of consumers.
The MinusA2 might have the option to set a schedule for purification, but it is quite limited. It doesn’t allow setting a different schedule for a different week.
Hence, if you are opting for something that functions accordingly to your constantly changing schedule, that’s quite a challenge for MinusA2. If you have such a schedule, coming home and going to bed should be the only time you will be home (therefore your only schedule for the purifier will be at nights).
The second and also the biggest con of the MinusA2 is the inability to effectively get rid of odor and smoke, especially in areas with space larger than a bedroom. Hence if you are looking to get rid of the smell of cigarette or something like that, you might be disappointed.
The MinusA2 is perfect for you if you are a non-smoker, and looking to improve air quality for your bedroom. The sextuple purification system could efficiently and effectively deal with anything (except smoke) without compromising any quality that might disrupt your rest in the bedroom.
9. Best Air Purifier for the Whole House – Coway AIRMEGA 400S
$519 (28% off) Buy On Amazon
If you read the review on the Coway AP-1512HH above, you should have gotten the sense that Coway is one of the strong players in the air purification industry. That’s why it is given that the AIRMEGA 400S will not disappoint in terms of performance.
The stated 1560 square feet coverage surely sounds like a great choice to cover the whole house or at least main areas. However, does it live up to the guarantee? Yes and no.
Upon testing, it does improve air quality within 1560 square feet, but to see significant air quality improvement, the air changes per hour was doubled.
As a result, the air quality within the area from 700 – 820 square feet skyrocketed, which is actually not bad. That is still a decent range as most household these days usually do not exceed that size (i.e., common areas and bedrooms). If you want to know more about the pros of AIRMEGA, click on this link. Otherwise, let’s move on to the cons.
Some people are quite disappointed in the ratio between efficiency and room coverage, but personally, we wouldn’t hold this against them. If you are looking to see significant improvement consistent over 1560 square feet, you might need to purchase an industrial level product; and it goes without saying that prices easily double the AIRMEGA.
In our perspective, the biggest disappointment is the dedicated mobile application. Connectivity and practicality are huge issues for these apps. To fully describe our testing on the apps will bore your brains out. To put it, the apps is bad.
It is worth mentioning that there are complaints of chemical odor from the purifier (which seems to be a common problem these days). Although not common among all purchasers, it is something to be mindful of during the purchase (didn’t happen to mine one though).
It is the best-balanced air purifier for the whole house without compromising much other major quality. There are some shortfalls here and there, but we do not think the overall performance is negatively skewed.

10. Best Small Air Purifier – GermGuardian AC4100
$66.67 (31% off) Buy On Amazon
Germ Guardian should not be a strange name to you anymore since they are the one who produces the best overall product in this list. The Guardian technology takes pride in their multi-layered safety; hence, you can expect this mini purifier to be 3-in-1 combo too.
We have to say; for a competitive price like that, the performance is not too shabby. It does trap pollutants and make air quality better. It works best in small areas, and significant improvement can be seen right away.
Seeing how it actually works and does what it is supposed to, it begs the question: what has a $50 product sacrificed? Durability. To be specific, it is not made for heavy-duty and turning on for 24 hours every day.
The wear and tear effects are quickly visible if you do not maintain it regularly and handle it properly (i.e. filter replacement, and turning it off periodically). Keep in mind that, working the little guy in a large room, with smoke and heavily polluted air will run the high risk of it bursting into fire.
Apart from the durability issue, it certain has the voice characteristic of a chihuahua (i.e., small built and loud bark, engine noise in this case). Though, if you look at it from another angle, it is a great way to wake your child up reliably. Maybe we should add alarm clock to the pros section and rename the subheading as 4-in-1?
Tight on budget and looking to clean the air around yourself anyway? Grab the AC4100 and let it help you breathe easier. Just remember to turn the little guy off and do not overwork it.
